Experience the Thrill of Hokkaido’s Untouched “Japow”: 5 Hidden Gems Beyond Niseko and Rusutsu
Are you ready to hit the slopes and chase that elusive powder snow? Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost island, is renowned for its world-class powder, but it’s no secret that popular resorts like Niseko and Rusutsu have seen a surge in popularity, driving up prices. If you’re looking for a more authentic and affordable powder experience, look no further!
Based on my four years living in Hokkaido, I’ve explored numerous ski resorts and compiled a list of hidden gems that offer exceptional powder skiing without the crowds or hefty price tags. Whether you’re a seasoned powder hound or a beginner looking to improve your skills, there’s a resort on this list for you.
1. Kiroro Snow World (Yoichi District)
While Kiroro is a relatively well-known resort, it still offers a fantastic powder experience without the exorbitant prices of Niseko and Rusutsu. With a lift ticket starting at around $53 (¥8,000), it’s a more budget-friendly option.
Kiroro features extensive tree runs and powder stashes, making it a paradise for powder hounds. Just be aware that some of the terrain is challenging, so be sure to assess your skill level before venturing off-piste.
In addition, Located near Otaru city, I recommend that you go sightseeing in Otaru. Salmon roe bowl is excellent!
2. Furano Ski Resort (Furano City)
Furano is another popular choice for powder enthusiasts, offering long, groom runs and plenty of off-piste terrain.
While the main Furano Zone is great for cruising, the real hidden gem is the H1 course, which connects to the Kitanomine Zone. This course requires a bit of a hike to access, but the reward is incredible powder skiing on both course sides. It’s so fan! I made strange noises of enjoyment there!!
Just be cautious of the flat section before reaching the H1 course, especially if you’re a snowboarder.
3. Asahidake Ropeway (Kamikawa District)
If you’re looking for a truly adventurous experience, Asahidake is the place to go. Located in Daisetsuzan National Park, Asahidake offers some of the most challenging and rewarding skiing in Hokkaido. Be prepared for strong winds and deep powder. The terrain here is vast and varied, allowing you to explore countless lines and find your own hidden stashes.
For your safety, please ensure you have all the necessary gear to avoid getting into trouble. It’s a bare nature untouched by human. Be well prepared and enjoy the unbelievable powder!
4. Hoshino Resorts Tomamu (Yubari District)
While Tomamu is known for its luxurious accommodations and family-friendly atmosphere, it also offers a world-class terrain park. The Tomamu Slope Style Park is a must-visit for freestyle skiers and snowboarders, with a variety of features to suit all skill levels.
There used to be a half pipe, but unfortunately it is gone now. When you get tired of Hokkaido deep powder, you can refresh yourself here in the Slope!
5. Sapporo Teine (Sapporo City)
Located near Sapporo city, Teine is a great option for those who want to combine city sightseeing with skiing. While the snow quality may not be as deep as some of the more remote resorts, Teine offers a variety of terrain, including a terrain park and groomed runs.
Conclusion
Hokkaido has so much more to offer than just Niseko and Rusutsu. With its abundant snowfall and diverse terrain, Hokkaido is a powder skier and snowboarder’s paradise.
